Event Description

In honor of Black History Month, Black residents of SOMA are invited to share stories about how their families came to New Jersey and how they came to live in SOMA. 

The project will incorporate genealogy, photos, oral storytelling, and conversation with those gathered. 

Coming to Jersey: Black Families Share Their Stories is a collaboration with the South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race.

NJ Proudly Celebrates
Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual observance in February that celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans to American history, culture, and society. Established in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson; Black History Month reflects on the struggles, highlights the triumphs, and provides inspiration to future generations.
